Former Slaves like Fredrick Douglas spoke out against the
system of slavery. Harriet Tubman who
was also a former slave helped runaway slaves escape to the North where they
found a better life. Many Blacks
enlisted in the Union army to fight for the Union. President Lincoln praised these men for
helping win the war.
