The sum of two numbers is 6 and their difference is -4, what are the two numbers?

x + y = 6

since 6 is a smaller number, you can just try plugging in numbers to see if they work.

1 + 5 = 6

it works, bur now you have to see if it works with

x - y = -4

1 - 5 = -4

it does work, so the two numbers are
1 and 5
