Why does 2^-1(6x-12) equal 3x-6?

2^-1 = 1/2 : . 1/2 (6x-12) =1/2* 6x - 1/2* 12 Basically ure dividing everything inside the brackets by two. Or multiplying by a half which is essentially the same thing.
